From Answers to Understanding: How AI is Reshaping Mathematical Thinking

AI has made answers easier to find than ever, but true learning isn't just about having the right answer--it's about knowing what questions to ask. This keynote explores how AI is reshaping mathematical learning, balancing computational fluency with deeper reasoning and problem-solving skills. Instead of replacing foundational math skills, AI challenges educators and students to rethink how they engage with process, iteration, and curiosity. We'll examine how AI connects learners with historical knowledge, enhances conceptual understanding, and serves as a tool to support - not replace - critical thinking in an AI-driven world.

Mikhael Loo is an AI Integration Specialist at the University of Tennessee, where he helps staff, educators, and students leverage AI as an assistive tool for learning, creativity, and problem-solving. With a background in software development, nuclear non-proliferation, and education, he has used AI to publish a book, complete a novel, launch a store, and secure a teaching role—showcasing how AI unlocks new opportunities.

A father of five, Mikhael is passionate about AI literacy, responsible AI use, and empowering learners to go beyond their perceived limitations. His keynote will explore how AI can enhance—not replace—human potential, bridging the gap between knowledge and understanding in an AI-driven world.
